My name is Dr Sonja Kneppers, I am the founder of Confident Kids Stand Tall and am a Chiropractor, I have worked in private practice for 16 years. I also trained as a Pilates Instructor and ran my own studio for 5 years.
I'm situated in Johannesburg and over the years have completed various courses on Paediatric chiropractic care. In June this year I completed a Paediatric Posture Specialist Course through the American Posture Institute.
My Chiropractic practice has always been focused on treating babies and children, I find it incredibly rewarding to walk the journey of children’s growth and development with them.
All the tiny babies that have been in my care over the years are now becoming teenagers. I am passionate about educating them about the importance of good posture for the physical benefit to their body but also their overall health and well-being, thereby grooming them into adults who respect and take care of themselves so that they can pass it on to their children.
I have realised that there must be millions of children and teenagers out there needing help and advice on maintaining good posture. Through my Confident Kids Stand Tall Posture Programme, I would like to reach 10,000 parents who wake up every morning worried about their children’s posture and the effect this may be having on them and help them to help their children grow into confident adults who stand tall.
My boys, aged 5 & 9 have been at home for most of 2020. In the beginning of lockdown there was plenty to do, but as time moved on and all the puzzles and Lego had been built and rebuilt, all the games played over and over again and ideas of how to entertain the kids became more and more difficult, technology became more of a saving grace, with the added time spent on the computer doing online learning.
As a chiropractor I was acutely aware and guilty about what all this time on devices was doing to my children’s posture and I realised there must be millions of parents out there in the same position. So I decided, with my 16 years of knowledge and experience as a chiropractor and Pilates instructor working with the body, spine and posture, that I can advise parents on how to teach their children how to interact with technology in the healthiest way possible for their body. By some stroke of luck I had enrolled in a Paediatric posture course with the American Posture Institute in February and lockdown gave me the opportunity to plough through the course at lightening speed. The course has provided me with diagnostic tools to assess postural problems remotely and loads of corrective exercises, stretches and ideas on how to change bad habits all with the outcome of improving posture.
And so here we are, in August I launched my Confident Kids Stand Tall Facebook group, through which I provide daily valuable insights into how you can get your children interacting with technology in the best way possible. I have set up my website and posture programme and am providing hundreds of parents with valuable information on how to help their children improve their posture while on their devices.
